Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my pet need to be under anaesthesia for a dental cleaning?
Yes. Safe, thorough cleaning requires general anaesthesia so we can clean below the gumline, examine every tooth, and take dental X-rays if needed. We run pre-anaesthetic bloodwork first to confirm your pet is healthy enough for the procedure.
How often does my dog or cat need a professional dental cleaning?
Most adult pets benefit from a cleaning every 1-2 years, depending on their individual dental health. Smaller breeds and cats often need more frequent care. We will give you a personalised recommendation at your wellness exam.
What are the signs that my pet might have dental pain?
Watch for bad breath, reluctance to chew on one side, dropping food, pawing at the mouth, or a sudden change in appetite. Many pets hide dental pain very well, so the absence of obvious signs does not mean their teeth are fine.
What happens if a tooth needs to be extracted?
If we find a tooth that cannot be saved, we will discuss it with you before doing anything. Extractions are performed under the same anaesthesia, so your pet is not put under twice. Most pets recover quickly and eat normally within a day or two.
Is dental disease really that serious?
Yes. Untreated dental disease causes chronic pain and can allow bacteria to enter the bloodstream, affecting the heart, kidneys and liver. Catching it early is both kinder to your pet and less expensive in the long run.
